23 settembre football and fumblesI am a big sports fan. I grew up in a household where you kind of had to be interested in sports, or you were left out. And, I grew up watching Tom Landry coach the Dallas Cowboys. What a great coach. Sigh. My brother is a highschool coach, and I have season tickets to baseball, basketball, and football for the Arkansas Razorbacks. Well, the football tickets are used by my son and d-in-law, but there in my name. Anyway, I am not only a fan, I know my sports. I know the rules. I know what makes a team win, and I know what makes a good coach.
The key to being a good coach, and having a winning team is discipline. Discipline. The first year that Arkansas's head coach coached for us, I knew without a doubt that he was not head coach material. He lacks discipline. in his personal life, and in his coaching. his players are in trouble off the field in large numbers, and on the field they act like goons. From that first year, I said, please leave. We need a real head coach.
But, he had the support of the money-people in the state because he is from Arkansas. (he played and then left when he didn't get the starting QB role; chump) Anyway, they kept him here, making excuses for losing seasons (he tried to leave twice). Last year, we had so much drama with our football program that I quit watching soaps. I mean, really, who needed that? Anyway, if you want to read about it, google it. It's a long story, and it would have gotten any other head coach fired anywhere else in the country.
But rumors have it that our head coach knows stuff, and he'll spill it if he is fired. Apparently, Arkansas has broken some rules along the way, and he is willing to bury us to keep his job (now understand, this is just rumor). But, he is still here Last year, we found ourselves with a Heisman candidate. And this year, the fans were ready for not just a Heisman candidate, but a Heisman winner.
But, alas, we still have the same head coach. He has a loyal crew around him (firing anyone who didn't agree with him over the past 10 years), and thus, things are still the same. We are awful. And the Heisman hopes are fading with each game we play. Our coach is fumbling away the season, and the future of our Heisman candidate. But, I knew that would happen that first year.
He may still be here coaching next year, but the Heisman candidate won't be, so ticket sales will sink. and then, maybe the money-people will notice that there's a problem. or maybe they still won't care. 08 luglio my cats are hidingwho can blame them? Wednesday, it was the dreaded fireworks all around, and now it is my crazy landlord. He decided that this weekend he would paint the place. but first, since it's been ages since this place was painted, he has had to scrape and blast the old paint off. If he would keep up this place on a regular basis, it would be an easy job, but no, he waits until forever has passed. First, he has to talk about it for a year or two, or maybe three? I learned a long time ago not to ask for anything from him because he won't do anything. The only time he really jumped in and did anything was after I called the police on the drug dealer he had rented to. OK, that deserves some explanation. While I live in a house, I live on only the top floor. Below me are two small apartments, and we all have our own entrances without access to the others. Now, a few years ago, my Landlord rented one of the small apartments to a 17 year old. He smoked pot so much that I got the munchies. Which, I complained to the landlord. And I told him that starting about 3 in the afternoon, traffic was crazy, with cars going in and out of the place. Months passed. I had my car vandalized, and when friends would stop by, young guys would go up and down the street right in front of the house, either on skateboards, bikes or cars, and just stare us down if we were outside. It had gotten really kind of scary. I begged my landlord to do something. NADA. I finally went to the police. I took them license plate numbers. The guy was dealing, of course, and he ended up moving within 5 days. Right after all of this, after the police had contacted my landlord, he did some things around the place that needed doing. This lasted about a week. He's a loser. I have a private drive, but it just has gravel which tends to get washed away. I have asked him for 2 or 3 years for more gravel, and he keeps telling me about his plan to pave it. but, the years keep passing. so why do I stay here? Because I can walk to campus. And parking on and around campus is hard to come by. Heck, I even have people parking in front of my place to walk to campus. Also, it has a screen porch. and I can let my cats out without really letting them out. It has been great for them. But back to the landlord. While he's scraping paint, he is making a lot of noise, and a mess. Does he clean the mess up? No. He just leaves old paint where it lands. He trimmed a tree, and left the branches where they fell. and then, he has the audacity to knock on my door, and ask me if he's making enough noise for me? Well, I was on the phone when he knocked, and although I answered the door because I thought he might need me to move something, or whatever, I just shut the door in his face. What a goober. He's always got a funny story, but I don't always have time for funny. Anyway, this has become a rant. and what do you know? It's not a political rant. Although, I do think my landlord is a republican. Mmmmmmm, now it all begins to make sense. LOL. I have been traveling around some blogs the last few days. It's been a long time, but I decided to get back in touch with some of the special people I have found around the Blogosphere. And I'm glad I did. There are some amazing people out there. And as the noise gets louder, I think I'll join my cats, and hide. But, please, come by and see me when you can. I promise to try to blog more, and visit more. and from this hippy chick a loud peace, love and light to all of you who stop by........ 09 ottobre walk with me hereso much political stuff going on, but there is more out there....
first of all, when you are in a drive-thru, please put your car in park. Do not, I repeat, Do Not, just put your foot on the brake and think you can keep it there. Like the girl behind me this weekend who rammed me in the drive-thru and then said, "I'm sorry, my car just started rolling." duh. That's what brakes are for. Good grief. And while it didn't scratch up my car worth turning it into insurance, those scratches weren't there before the girl's car started rolling.
second, do people not get baby-sitters anymore? Must they take their young children everywhere they go? The latest: Bikes, Blues, and BBq came to town (pictures coming soon), and in the heat with all those bikes, and all that noise, there were babies and toddlers screaming. Honestly, there are some places that you shoud not take young children.
third, stop parking on my street and turning your car alarm on. just stop it. It is most annoying to have to hear your car alarm go off before I even have to get up in the morning. Or what about during Bikes, Blues and BBq? When every motorcycle that went by set your car alarm off? What is so valuable in your 1998 Mercury that you need to set your alarm? Just curious?
fourth, the bunny and the chicken. This summer I noticed a small speckled hen running around in our backyard.... Immediately I assumed that someone had bought one of those cute little chicks for Easter and then let it go when it no longer fit their idea of cute. then, there appeared a big white bunny with bown spots. OK, so they apparently bought one of those cute little Easter bunnies too. And when it became too much, they let it out with the Easter chick. Two pets that had been held in their little hands and then released to fend for themelves....people are cruel. we are a cruel people.
fifth, do not forget the elderly in your life. spend time with them. talk to them. and really listen to them.
sixth, vote. when election day gets here, make sure your voice is heard. do not waste your freedom to choose.
fseventh, do something nice for a friend who is having a bad day. just because. 15 agosto Talking about Growing Up Healthy: No brats allowed! - Growing Up Healthy - MSNBC.com

21 aprile more on gas pricesWhat can we do about gas prices? The number one story behind the Duke rape case and the TomKitten birth, is the story about GasPrices at the pump. I have paid close attention to it, and the main thing I have noticed is how quiet this administration is on the subject. Of course what can they say? The energy policy they do have is filled with ‘fat’ for the oil companies. No looking ahead to the future with this administration. No attempt to even pretend to start looking for alternate fuels. But I can only lay so much blame at the door of these Oil and gas connected politicians.. As a whole, this country’s leaders have planned poorly if at all for a future without oil and gas. Too many ties to the oil industry on all levels. If you are a congressman, odds are you have stock in either an oil company, or a company associated with the oil and gas industry. (Or you are Cheney who is making a fortune off all of the Haliburton no-bid contracts). The average American hasn’t paid much attention to the oil and gas industry either. They either own stock with the same companies the politicians have stock with, or they don’t have the money to own stock, and blindly trust the leaders to keep our country on the right path. A small percentage of Americans have realized, and do realize, that this country’s dependence on oil is a dangerous and ignorant path. But the few voices have been buried by the majority for decades....and even now, their voices are but whispers as we face rising gas prices at the pumps. On the news I see stories of people pawning their belongings in order to buy a tank of gas; I see gas shortages in the NE part of the country; I see people having to make choices that aren’t pretty. And then I see our Prez flying from the White House to the airport in a helicopter. OK, the helicopter didn’t take off due to mechanical problems, but then he got in a really big car, and about 20 cars went with him. And I see him totally ignoring the issue. When he took this country into war with Iraq, one of the things we heard was that the oil produced there would pay for the war. Well, last night on Anderson Cooper, I saw a story about American contractors going over there and getting duffle bags of cash (our tax money) to do projects. And these companies were padding their books, or just taking the cash and running with it. Oil production is random at best because we have no control over the situation there. And just today I saw where the Iranian leader was very happy about the rise in oil prices. I’m glad we have made somebody happy. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr I have seen a couple of stories about the price of gas going up because of a change in the rules about how much of a certain additive can be put into gasoline. And I shake my head every time. These oil companies knew in plenty of time that the rules were changing, and they should have, could have prepared in plenty of time without such a drastic increase in gas prices. I also see where they have record profits every quarter, and I shake my head again. What incentive do they have to work on alternate fuels? I am totally bummed by the mess I see our country in. I am totally pissed at not just the republican administration, although they get most of my ire, but at any and all politicians who have done little or nothing about this problem. Has anyone planned ahead? And the automobile industry should be shot. Twice between the eyes. Three times even. Bigger, badder, bolder, BIGGER.....good grief. Stop the madness. If you quit making them, people will quit buying them. Simple math even for an English teacher. So, what do we do? Individually we can only do so much. But, if we were to unite in some way, we could move mountains. Any suggestions? Any organizations we should link to? I guess maybe this administration should have worried less about the flash of a boob during a super bowl half-time, and more about what happens if we run out of oil? Maybe? Peace out 06 gennaio The War on ChristmasThe Holy Wars (otherwise known as the War on Christmas) I know, I know, Christmas has come and gone, but the lingering messages left over from the holidays need to be addressed one more time before the new year gets too far advanced. Over the holidays I picked up my 8 year old niece. Not two minutes into the car, and she says "did you know there are some people who don’t want to say ‘Merry Christmas’?" Geeze. I could not believe it. Eight years old. So, being the dutiful Aunt, I explained the best I could the reasons some people said ‘Happy Holidays!’ instead of ‘Merry Christmas’. I had to really be careful here because I did not want to step on the toes of my sister-in-law. But in that one conversation, it hit me. People will believe anything. No wonder we are in such a mess. My sister-in-law represents many of the ‘Merry Christmas’ bunch that closed ranks this holiday season and began their protests over the War on Christmas. She goes to one of the ‘Christian’ churches in small town America. And whatever they say, is the gospel. (Years ago she banned the Harry Potter books from her home and kids because her church told her that only devil worshipers read them. My son has read each and every book, and he is no devil worshiper.) When the War on Christmas was declared to be real and very much among us, I listened to news on TV, and read news on the internet. My favorite news show for keeping up with this War was Countdown on MSNBC. The news person (if you can call them that) who perpetuated this war, was a guy on FOX news who blatantly lied time and time again. He was so hot under the collar about the War, that he didn’t realize that his own network was selling ‘Holiday Ornaments’ instead of ‘Christmas ornaments’. Only after Countdown called them on it, did FOX change their ad to say ‘Christmas Ornaments’. Now, back to my sister-in-law who represents many in America. She has one room in her house that is full of Christmas decorations. She has snowmen, reindeer, snow globes, candles, Santas, Wise Men, Nativity scenes, a large Christmas tree, and an even larger Christmas bear that is hooked up to a microphone you can use to sing songs while the Bear’s mouth moves. It’s very creepy really. This woman shops for Christmas from Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve. She traveled to another state, several hours away to shop. And yet, this woman is worried that some people say "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas"? And it starts with her church. This church, like many others around the country, chose to believe one man’s version of the ‘War on Christmas’. They did not bother to research any facts for themselves, but chose to believe one man’s version, one man’s words, that were echoed by others with little research or fact-finding. These people are in large numbers big supporters of the President, so when he sent out his Christmas cards with a ‘Happy Holiday Greeting’ instead of a ‘Merry Christmas’ greeting, there was a quiet uproar. These people were in a quandary. The man they supported was right in the middle of the War on Christmas. And for the most part, the people who were so up in arms about this issue, didn’t even realize how silly it all sounded. So what if people choose to say, "Happy Holidays!" instead of ‘Merry Christmas!’? Does that really change what is in anyone’s heart? Or soul? How many poor children or needy families did those warriors help out during the holidays? Or were they so wrapped up in the war that they didn’t know how to help anyone? Oh, they spent. They shopped. And they totally didn’t see that the downfall of Christmas will not be saying "happy holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas." The downfall of Christmas and its true meaning will be the continued marketing of the holiday that starts earlier and earlier every year. Shopping for the perfect gift, the most gifts, or the biggest gifts has eroded the true meaning of Christmas more than anything else ever could. Children get more toys, more things, while families feel pressured to spend more and more to keep up with their neighbors, or to make their children happy. and then they protest that people who want to say ‘happy holidays’ instead of "Merry Christmas" are killing Christmas, taking ‘Christ’ out of Christmas. The true meaning is being attacked by outsiders. But, oh, how they spend. *** I wish all of you the best in 2006. I have declared this the year of the redhead. So, if you are one, you are in for quite a treat. I hope you all made resolutions that are easy to keep, but that if you break them you will feel no guilt. Learn your strengths, know your fears, and find the strength to conquer them all. Peace, light and love to all who enter here. And thank you for all of your good wishes. Gj 01 novembre Keep your religion out of my governmentSome points. I know that there are Christians in the world who are not bad people, and I know that they are Democrats and Republicans. I also, know that some Christians take offense when some of us use that term in a negative context. So, here is some rambling about that point. Tonight I had the Tucker Carlson show on while I graded papers. At the end of his show, he takes phone calls. Apparently last night he made some rude comments about witches and those who practice witchcraft. Tonight a man called in and disputed whatever Tucker had said last night (sorry, I don’t know exactly what he said). The man on the phone was very polite and explained that most practicing witches worship an earth goddess and respect every living creature. After they played the message, Tucker called him a moron for worshiping an earth goddess. On a political message board I visit, a man wrote that the reason he hated democrats was because they mocked people of faith. In essence he was saying: all democrats mock people of faith. People of faith are republicans. Therefore, all democrats mock republicans. Come on, you know you learned this in English class 101. When Miers was the nomination for the Supreme Court, the administration assured the Republican right that she was an evangelical Christian. (Wink, wink, nudge, nudge) I have friends who are Christians. But I have friends who have different faiths. Those friends are Republicans and Democrats. And I don’t have a problem with Christians. What I do have a problem with, are those Christians who want to push their faith into my government, into my life. Every faith is supposed to be honored in this country, not just the faith of those who are elected to office. Understand this: I was raised in the Southern Baptist Church. This church believes that women should obey their man. Get real. And these are the same type of Christian who want to control not only what women do in public, but what they do in private. Again, keep your religion out of my bedroom. Understand that we are not a theocracy. That is what we are fighting in Iraq. Keep religion out of my government. Be religious all you want, but do not try to pass your religion off as law of the land. You worry about your path to Heaven, let me worry about mine. If you do not understand that my personal liberties are just as important as your right to your religious beliefs, then you need to stay out of the debate. I believe our government is based on equality for all, not just equality for white Christian males. (My apologies to my white Christian male friends) 10 ottobre Pet peevesPet Peeves, please add your own... I have listed below 10 of my pet peeves. I am limiting myself to just 10. And I encourage you to add to this list your own. These are not in any particular order. 1. People who leave animals in cars. Yep, it’s turned cooler. The temperature is in the 60's, but that doesn’t mean that you can go to Target and leave your animals in a locked car or van. Because in your car, the temperature is a lot higher than 60 degrees. You claim to be an animal lover, and yet you still leave an animal in a locked car or van while you shop for how long? Grrrrrrrrrrrr..... 2. The skinny little (mostly) blonde chicks who claim to be movie stars. Paris, you are no movie star. If your family didn’t have money, you would be a hooker. OK, that’s a little harsh, but geeze. Movie stars include but are not limited to: Greta Garbo, Bette Davis, Katherine Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn, Diane Lane, Elizabeth Taylor, and the likes of which you little girls can only dream of becoming anything like. 3. Musicians, singers, and today’s radio. Jessica, Ashley, Britney: You cannot sing. You are not musicians. You are hacks taking the 12-15 year olds for every dime they have. Shame on radio for allowing this crap to be played on the air. Shame on advertisers for supporting it. Thank the gods for satellite radio. Thank the gods for the local classical rock station. 4. Drivers and not the golf kind. Do not tailgate me when we are on the road. Understand that I leave the space between me and the car in front of me for safety, not for you to swerve into because your lane is just not moving fast enough. What part of "wherever you are going will be there when you get there" do you not understand? Do not get in the fast lane and go slower than the slow lane. Do not turn in front of me without using your blinker. And do not drive a car in a need of a new muffler. I do not appreciate breathing your exhaust. (I have decided there is not enough time in the day to finish this.) 5. People who toe the party line You know who you are. You are the people who decry everything about the ‘other party’ while supporting your own party no matter what. You don’t worry about the facts, and you don’t want to know them. You have long stopped caring what is best for the country, and only care that your party is in ‘power’ and stays in power, no matter what they do, or how they do it. You have long stopped thinking for yourself, yet you preach to everyone else as though you know what you are talking about. Think for yourself once in awhile. You might be surprised. 6. Groups that complain about what they see on television oops, for 5 seconds you saw a woman’s nipple (after you ran the TIVO back in slow motion). Big deal. Your children see people murdered on television and in movies every day. They see people tortured and raped. They hear ever curse word imaginable in your home or at school. And yet, a little nudity, or the slip of a curse word on television, and it’s all hands on deck, complain so someone will get into trouble. A cartoon shows the crack of an ass above a guy’s pants, and the next thing you know, they are having to blur it. (It’s a cartoon folks.) Stop the madness. Oh, televisions have an off button. 7. Professional athletes I am a big sports nut. (This does not include the NBA, as I do not consider it a sport.) But, I am sick of these whiney brats. They are paid millions to play their sport. Yet, they whine, and show out so much it makes the games less enjoyable. Somehow, they forget about the money they are being paid ‘to play’. Get a grip. 8. Media headlines about who is pregnant in the world of celebrity Stop! I don’t care who is pregnant in Hollywood. They are not my relatives. I don’t care half the time when it is one of my relatives. I do not care at all if TomKat has a kitten. Isn’t that ridiculous? I don’t care. Stop wasting my news watching time with such drivel. 9. People who have no control over their children in a restaurant Enough. I do not think your screaming child is adorable. I do not think that your child throwing things, and banging things against the highchair is funny. I go out to eat to have a stress-free meal where dishes are magically whisked away from the table and not into my kitchen. Do you think your screaming, fit-throwing child is helping with the stress-free part? What part of rude, crude and socially unacceptable do you not understand? 10. People who have speakers in their cars bigger than their cars If I wanted to hear your music, I would ride in your car with you. I do not want to hear it. I do not want you to drive by me on the street, or down the street I live and rattle my windows. Do you really think that sounds good? It doesn’t. It does not make you cool either. It simply rattles windows and causes babies to cry. Stop it. thanks for stopping by. Feel free to link my space, and if you want me to link yours let me know. 23 settembre Not that I have to explain, but...I do not mind those who disagree with my views. I do mind those who come on to my space and attack me personally. As far as I know I have never done anything to any of you.
So, Smokey, whoever the hell you are, ball up. if you have something to say to me, leave me an email address. If I know you and have done something to you on a personal level then let me know.
If not, then stay away from my blog. It's simple. You do not have to visit my blog if you hate me so much because of something I have said on here. As I visit the world of blogs, I tend to find sights that I enjoy reading and stop by those for a visit. When I find others I disagree with, I tend to move on. And while I may comment on their space, I do not attack them personally.
For those who don't agree with my policy to delete, I simply say this: It's my space. And if you have seen the comments posted by this Smokey person, then trust me, you wouldn't want them on your space either. I believe in one of his comments, he told me to go "f##T myself", and it's not the usual F-word.
Also, for those who want to correct my spelling, or other errors. Thanks. But I type this to enjoy and have fun with it. And although as I travel I see a lot of misspellings and sentence errors, I never correct them. The world of Blog is not the place to play English teacher, and it is here I allow myself not to worry about it.
I would apologize for those who do not get my sense of humor, but I am not about to apologize for who I am. And so I will not apologize for deleting any comments that personally attack me.
I am seriously thinking about limiting contact to my blog, and would ask any of you who want to be on that contact list to email or leave a comment to let me know. I hate to lose those who really come to visit because they enjoy my world. Power to DeleteThe Power to delete. I really am honored that most of you are stopping by my humble little spaces. That being said, you know that sometimes you have to weed the garden so the flowers can grow and multiply. Sadly, I have had to do some weeding. Power. Absolute Power. This is my Blog. I make the rules. And the rules are subject to change at any moment. They are my rules. MINE! If you come here and leave a comment, I appreciate it very much. What I do not appreciate, is for some smartass to come here and leave a comment without any contact information. If you want to leave a hateful, ignorant comment, I will delete it. That’s my power. I don’t care how smart you’ve tested, I’m smart too. The thoughts on this space, are mine. They belong to me. I am allowing others to view them. Some will agree and others will not, but you are not going to come here and deride my beliefs. And I have the power over your comments. If you want to come here and tell me to kill myself (as someone did), without contact information, I will delete. (And in that case, I reported the person to MSN.) If you don’t like what you read here, move on. Trust me, you can find something you like on MSN spaces, if not the rest of the internet. Delete. It’s easy. You click on the little x, hit yes, and BAM, the comment is gone. If you want to leave a message, and contact information, that is something else. I will read those comments and leave them, because the people who do that aren’t hiding in the shadows. They aren’t making jabs and running and hiding behind anonymity that is allowed on the internet. If you do not have guts to stand behind your comments publicly, so that others can find you and respond to you personally, then do not bother to leave a message on this space. I will delete it. Power. I love it. The Power to Delete. Too bad we can’t use it in real life sometimes. 12 settembre the animals of the hurricane and govt. red tapeI tell myself not to watch any more; and then I see a story about pets in New Orleans. And I sit and watch CNN about the animal rescue effort. Louisianna has some wierd law that doesn't allow any of the animals to be shipped out of state. So, the huge collection shelter in Gonzales (sp) is full to overflowing with yet more animals needing room.
each animal is checked by a vet and given a bath, but they have so little room.
I read where one businessman from California charted a plane to fly 200 animals out of the hurricane area, but was only allowed to get 80 out.
Red Tape. It's everywhere. It's ridiculous.
It's like the story I saw about doctors from Washington state who travel to disaster areas. They flew to the Tsunami and were able to go to work immediately. They flew to the Gulf, and were not allowed to work because they were not licensed in those states. How ridiculous.
I would hope that we get the same medical care from state to state; therefore, there should be a national licensure. And, in case of emergency, doctors should be able to practice across state lines. I would hate to think that after a terrorist attack in a major city, doctors from outside the state couldn't help those who were injured. Another big thing wrong with our government.
The new FEMA director appointed today? He's the guy who, 2 1/2 years ago, suggested all homeowners buy lots of duct tape and plastic sheeting. OK? Duct tape. Yeah, that's the ticket.
I watched the 9/11 show about flight 93 last night after saying I wouldn't, couldn't. and I remember that when 9/11 happened, my first thought when the dust settled was about the pets left behind. (Honestly it was the only way I could wrap myself around all those lost lives). I thought, how sad for those animals to see their owner leave for the day as usual, and then never to see them again.
I heard yesterday that Karon Hughes, newly appointed to some political office by W, compared the terrorist of 9/11 to the looters duirng the Hurricane aftermath in an interview with the BBC. I tried to find somewhere that could say she didn't say that. This woman, now representing my country, saying something that dumb. Surely it didn't happen. (shakes head)
And as the days go by, I try to read other news stories to get my mind off the New Orleans disaster. Today, I read that 11 children were found in cages somewhere in Ohio. Adoptive/foster parents had children from ages 1 to 14 in wire cages with no blankets or pillows. My heart breaks. Why? How? 21st century America?
Yet politicians in America will continue to bind with red tape and people who abuse children and animals will still be allowed to wander the streets of our cities. Red tape. Got scissors?
11 settembre good griefGeorge Will is an idiot. OK, I'm watching one of the spin shows, and they are discussing the problems of the Hurricane. Who's to blame? State, local, federal, they all deserve some blame. Of course, Mother Nature is the real culprit. Although you could argue that global warming and the destruction of the Wetlands on the coast played a big part, which puts the blame back on man.
And George Will says it's a failure of families. A failure of families? He starts explaining this by addressing the number of children born out of wedlock, and the fact that fathers are not around these kids. And how, this is a high statistic with the poor blacks in New Orleans. If I didn't want to have to pay for a new TV, at this point I was ready to throw a brick thru the damn thing. George Will is an idiot.
Whatever it is, it is failure of our society that causes these mothers to raise these children alone. We condemn them for having babies, and yet we let the fathers off. They seldom are forced to take responsibility, and thus they continue their ways of fathering children and moving on. Where are their repercussions?
These mothers have to take care of these kids the best that they can. Child care cost a fortune. Have you priced it lately? If you only make minimum wage, then how can you afford it? Tax breaks don't help those who don't make enough to pay taxes in the first place. These people have long been ignored by the 'haves'. But now, they face them every day on their television screens. And George Will blames the families?
My students are reading "A Modest Proposal" by Swift. A very fitting essay during this time. Swift was trying to get the attention of the 'Haves' to focus on the 'Have-Nots' with is horrifying proposal. I'm proud to say my students are noticing the similiarities of the societies.
Understand this: These families are not to blame for the disaster in New Orleans. It is a failure of our government from the ground up. And now, the world has seen it. The dirty little secret is out. There are poor people in this country. Poor people whom are ignored and hidden in the shadows of the Haliburtons and the AT&T's. Poor people whom have long been forgotten by those in Washington as they pass spending bills filled with 'Pork" and passed tax breaks for the wealthy.
Why should you care? The poverty level has increased in the past 5 years. The gap between the rich and the poor is getting smaller, basically getting rid of the middle class. Soon, we will have rich and poor. Where will you fall?
sorry this is so disjointed. But George Will is an idiot.
06 settembre For those who say now is not the time to point fingersWhen is the time? If we sit back and watch and wait without saying anything, then those offenders will believe that we are in agreeance with thier acts, or lack of actions. For those who say one level of government is guilty but not another, I say, grow up. All levels failed the people in New Orleans, failed the people in this country. Americans failed. Americans were allowed to die that should have been and could have been saved. We have only begun to hear the horror stories from those who did make it out alive. And when the body count is revealed, we will know the true horror.
Republicans, Democrats, all are calling for investigations into this mess. And hopefully answers will be found. But the people in New Orleans know some of them right now. We as a nation, have to continue to ask questions of our government. Even though this is a very divided nation right now, we are all Americans. And we all need to pull together to correct the wrongs and aid those who are suffering.
I heard a talking head on one of the news shows today railing against the state and local governments while giving the feds a free ride. It was ridiculous. And he wasn't even being rational, but just yelling so that no one else could speak up. What does that accomplish? Does he believe that if he prevents the other side from speaking then what they say will disappear? Does he believe that if he yells loud enough and often enough that everyone will believe what he has to say?
I've heard from some that those who are pointing fingers are politicizing the issues. And I shake my head, and remember a President who did just that with 9/11. Even though he said he wouldn't, that we shouldn't, he did, and still does. Whenever questions come up about something he does, he brings up 9/11 as the reason for everything, or reminds us to not forget 9/11.
Well think about this: If the reaction by the feds is the best we got, when we do have a major terrorist attack, we are in big trouble.
04 settembre about the pets left behindFor a week, I’ve watched the horror in New Orleans unfold on my television set and internet. I’ve seen more than I wanted, read more than I should. But I can’t stop. The horror of it all eats away at me as I try to sleep, or work on school work. And the biggest hurt in my heart, the one that keeps me from sleeping, is the animals that were left behind. I look at my two cats and I keep petting them, picking them up for hugs (which they tolerate but don’t like), and I stay as close to them as I can get. I even get down in the floor with them at times. I listen to their breathing as they sleep, and I watch them as they wander in and out of the rooms I’m in. I brought them both into my life: one as a 6 week old kitten 13 years ago, the other as a feral kitten about 5 years ago. They sense something I think. They trust me not to hurt them, and to take care of them. When I sleep a little past the time they think I should be up, they are in my bed gently nudging me, unless it’s much later when they forget the gentle part, awake. They know that I will put out fresh food and water, and open the door to the deck so they can go out for their morning air. They watch the squirrels and birds from afar with no chance of getting close to one. An occasional bug makes that mistake, and loses its life. But in New Orleans, animals, countless animals, were left by well-meaning owners as they exited the city before the storm hit. Thinking they would be back, they left them a few days food and water. And these animals are either drowned, or dying slow deaths. If they escaped, they have no idea how to survive. Owners, not unlike me, have spoiled and pampered these pets with pet food and fresh water, and soft places to sleep. And now, those owners are gone. Disappeared from the reality the animals knew. And I look into the eyes of my cats, and I imagine the hurt and pain in the eyes of those animals left behind. And I can’t sleep. I can’t do simple tasks. I’ve read how people blame God for taking out the city, and I can only hope that my God would never do that. Even if there was a hint that some people deserved it, the animals didn’t. And the people who left those animals behind? Will they ever recover? Will they ever not have a restless night haunted with the nightmare of their pets’ slow and painful death in slowly rising waters? How will they ever forgive themselves for the hard choices they made? How will any of us ever forgive ourselves for the loss of so many pets’ lives. People caught in the storm, and the aftermath, had choices, made choices. Their pets lives depended on their choices. And now, I hold my cats a little more often, pet them a little more often, and promise them that I will never leave them. And I only hope that I never have to let them down. I made my donation to one of the animal groups rescuing the animals left behind (and I suggest you do the same). I figure that the people have enough money coming in for now. And I made a conscious effort to not watch any more news about the Hurricane hell. And I think about those owners, and the pain that they must feel if they felt anything like what I feel for my pets. Ouch. There is such a thing as hell on earth. 01 settembre The mess in NOMay I just say that I have never seen such a disorganized mess? Everyone says that NO knew something like this was going to happen; it was just a matter of time. And yet, they seem totally unprepared for it. A lot of the people who did not leave, could not. They either didn't have the means, or the money, or both. And yet, at no time did I hear the govt. offering busrides out of town. Surely this should have been in the plans for an event such as this? I just don't get it. (shakes head)
I read today that the resulting gas prices and shortage of oil would mean a strong push to drill in ANWAR. Whatever. Even if it passes, it will be 10-15 years before we see any result. People are bitching because the crazy environmentalists have made sure the standards are too high for companies to build new refineries. Good Grief. Don't they know it's just an excuse the big Oil companies use? With the profits they are making (record), they could easily meet the guidelines and build new refineries.
But the bigger question is, why? Why are we still relying on oil and gas? We know that at some point the earth is gonna say "out of gas". And then what? Why are we so slow to look to the future? Is it just greed of the few? Or stupidity? I hate to think that we are stupid? I hate to think that the greed of a few is keeping us from looking to the future? So, what is it? (shakes head)
and why, oh why are people not allowed to take pets to shelters? Sure, I know the reasoning behind it, but the number one reason people give for staying (people who could afford to leave), is that they do not want to leave their pets. And those that did, now know that their pets were left to watery graves. This is a rule that needs to be adjusted in some way. Surely, some shelters can open just for pet owners?
and what's with the guys with guns? I hate to say it, but it looks like a third world country in our country.
and what is with the people who live in this country saying that God is punishing those who live in that 'sinful city'? The terrorists in other countries are using that rational, so does that mean that these Americans using this are terrorists?
Seems logical if you use their reasoning. 29 agosto The Morning After PillYesterday, I read a headline on one of the news sites that said 1 in 7 girls in high school are pregnant. And today, the headline is that the FDA has put off a decision about whether the morning after pill should be available without a prescription. (Shakes head) Now, we all know that if this were some sort of miracle pill for males instead of a pill to prevent pregnancies for females, that the FDA would have already made the decision to make it available without prescription, and major insurance firms would be paying for it. But since this is for the female, well, let’s not be hasty now. Apparently the FDA did not notice the numbers of girls in high school who are pregnant. They are waiting 60 days to allow more input from the public. This means, that one of those ultra conservative religious groups with huge mailing list will have time to get the ‘word’ out to that mailing list. This will result in the same form letter being sent in by 100's if not thousands of people who do what they are told regardless of what it means to everybody else. Imagine, being young again...imagine being carried away in the back seat of a car, or worse, being at a party and not being able to remember anything after drinking the ‘punch’. Imagine the fear, the panic, the worry...all of which could be avoided with one quick trip to the pharmacy the next day. But, oh no, let’s wait. Let’s see how many people can write in an oppose the decision that is supported by so many rational people. The females have to deal with the pregnancy, and the results. Few doctors perform abortions, and so we have more young females with babies, and without support. The male is able to go on and live life without the responsibility of the child that resulted from the act. The female is forever tied to that child, and labeled with names that I won’t repeat here. Just think, how one mistake reshapes the life of the female and doesn’t (usually) touch the life of the male. How being able to walk into a pharmacy and pick up the morning after pill would level the playing field. Maybe that’s what they are afraid of. 22 agosto school startedThey're back! the students that is. For those who live in a college town or community, you know what I mean. yes, you forget over the summer how bad the traffic is, and the parking around the campus. Living as close to campus as I do, I tend to have cars towed each semester. One time, it was 3 days later before the guy came looking for his car. He really didn't remember where he parked it. (shakes head)
I've been prepping for classes. And for those who teach, you know how time consuming that is. So, I have been a slacker in blogging and reading blogs. But, I'm back! The ramblings will definitely get a little crazier as I deal with those young men and women who think they know it all. Heaven help us.
I noticed that gas prices are causing more crime at the pumps. Somewhere in the US, a guy tried to stop an SUV from driving off without paying, and he got run over. The SUV kept going. The guy who got run over is dead. And our prez is still trying to tie the 9/11 terrorist to Iraq. mmmm, so, the facts are to be ignored?
Gas prices are leveling off at just under $2.60 here, but I don't expect that to last. Anyone seen the last quarterly profits for the major oil companies in this country? just curious.
Thanks for all who have stopped by. I am enjoying blog traveling. It is quite an adventure.
18 agosto gas prices and morewell, I am back. And in three days, gas prices shot up 10 cents. This is also the week students return, and they drive the biggest, baddest cars their parents can afford. This campus is in a relatively small town/city, and the addred cars create one big headache. Since I live close to campus, my street becomes the parking lot for students who cannot fit their cars in the limited parking spaces. I am lulled into forgetting about that extra headache during the summer, and then the fall semester begins. Then reality slaps me in the face. Ouch!
My desktop keeps giving me an error message when I try to use word, telling me that my Microsoft Office needs a critical update. I have Microsoft Home, and so when it tries to download the critical update, it can't. It tells me it has been unsuccessful, and I can't imagine why not? Something called 'abetterinternet' keeps trying to hi-jack that same desktop, and my spy sweeper keeps asking me what to do? Well, I would love a better internet, but I'm not into being hi-jacked. I keep thinking if I had a better internet, I wouldn't need spy sweeper.
Spy Sweeper? sounds dark and dangerous doesn't it? Alas, it is pretty boring and lacks the excitement of a James Bond movie. But what would I do without it?
I sit here watching home improvement shows hoping that by osmosis my home repairs will be made, and I will have that accent wall I've always wanted. So far nothing has happened. I think I want to learn how to operate a power tool. It seems like fun, but so far, I've avoided it. I do own a hammer.
I forgot to get chocolate when I went to the store. I have one lone candy bar in my fridge. Hershey did some neat trick where they combined certain candy bars to make a limited edition candy bar. I am trying the plain Hershey bar combined with a Heath bar. Why on earth would you limit that? Hopefully, it will get me through the night.
and I will close with the gas prices and this question. Why is it that when the price of a barrel of oil goes up, the price of gas at the pumps goes up immediately, but when the price of a barrel of oil goes down, the price of gas does not? 15 agosto Gas Prices and other headachesHere in the part of the state growing the fastest due to the likes of Walmart, Tyson, and JB Hunt, gas prices have hit over $2.50 per gallon. And the Prez is on vacation for 5 weeks. Damn! Must be nice to be able to just ignore what is quickly becoming a headache for the masses. Public transportation is not an option for most of the state, and people here, are poor. I mean, poor. Luckily I live close enough to campus to walk. Too bad, I have to head out of town for a few days and actually drive.
Back to the leader of our country. Why isn't he even addressing this issue? I know that people are beginning to really feel the pinch all over the country. What's up that he can't be bothered to even pretend to deal with this headache? (shakes head)
For all of you college football fans ready and waiting with baited breath for the first kick-off, it's almost upon us. But, I will hate to see my baseball go. Steroids and all. Nothing better than a man in a baseball uniform. Nada!
And, I'm almost out of chocolate.
